When you’re hungry, you probably don’t think about your aching joints. But you very well should, especially if you have arthritis of any kind.

You’re probably all too familiar with the pain, swelling and joint stiffness, which affects 50 million Americans who have arthritis. But did you know that eating the wrong foods, can affect your joint pain and make you feel stiffer and ache even more?

Yes, certain foods cause flare-ups of your arthritis pain. Science shows that foods do indeed impact the progression of arthritis. Just like acidic foods such as tomatoes and citrus fruits, like oranges can make your heartburn to rear up, and onions or beans that may make you uncomfortably gassy.

But, before I tell you what foods to avoid, let’s clarify some simple biochemistry in your body...

Due to biochemical reactions in your body that occur with every type of food you eat on a daily basis, some foods can actually speed up your arthritis, while other foods help you FIGHT arthritis.

The culprit is inflammation, which irritates arthritic joints and causes stiffness and pain. The inflammation caused by certain foods, have a MAJOR impact on your arthritis joint pain. When we talk about inflammation, we’re not talking about the inflammation that is part of your body’s immune response.

While inflammation is beneficial in the short term (it helps your wounds and infections heal), when inflammation becomes chronic – as it can when you eat certain foods – it contributes to your arthritis and even worsens your pain.

#5 Bagels, Muffins and Pasta - Gluten

Any member of the refined carbohydrate family – white bread, muffins, pasta, bagels, etc. – drive up inflammation because the body processes them into sugar. In fact, there’s not much difference between a bagel and a heaping pile of sugar, as far as your body is concerned.

Although a formal link has yet to be established, joint pain is a common symptom described by people with gluten sensitivity, or gluten intolerance.

Gluten, is a protein found in wheat, rye and barley, and may provoke a response that may trigger symptoms such as joint pain hours or days after the gluten is eaten.

To find out if gluten may be contributing to your arthritis symptoms, eliminate it along with refined carbs from your diet for 2 weeks, then slowly reintroduce them and watch for any symptom flare-ups.

Don't worry though... There's a trick that you can use to protect yourself, and it has to do with COUNTERACTING the damage of arthritis itself. 



#4 French Fries and other Processed Fast Food

These make the list because they’re a common source of synthetic trans fats, which come from foods that contain partially hydrogenated oil. Trans fats are strongly linked to systemic, chronic inflammation and are so bad for you that the Institute of Medicine recommends you simply keep trans fatty acid consumption as low as possible.

French fries are by no means the only culprit; trans fats are also commonly found in savory snacks (like microwave popcorn), frozen pizzas, cake, cookies, pie, margarines and spreads, ready-to-use frosting, and coffee creamers.

Soybean, corn, peanut, safflower and sunflower oils are examples of vegetable oils that are rich in omega-6 fats, which most Americans consume far too much of. It’s not only a matter of the oil you use for cooking at home. Far more so it’s the vegetable oils added to just about every processed food that end up being a problem.

Eating too many of these omega-6 fats may increase inflammation in your body, which may make your arthritis symptoms worse.

#3 Blackened and Barbecued Foods

Foods cooked at high temperatures – including char-broiled, blackened, barbecued, fried, etc. – often contain harmful byproducts of the cooking process called advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs are highly inflammatory and can damage your tissues, making your arthritis worse.

Any time a food is cooked at high temperature (this includes foods that are broiled, fried, grilled, blackened, barbecued, etc.), toxic advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are formed. AGEs are readily absorbed by your body, where they wreak havoc, causing high levels of inflammation. Stewing, boiling, braising, crock pot or steaming will instead help minimize the amount formed in your food.



#2 Nightshade Vegetables

Nightshade vegetables, include potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers and tobacco, which contain calcitriol, an active form of vitamin D that may lead to calcium deposits in soft tissues such as tendons, ligaments, cartilage and joints if over consumed. This may cause or contribute to inflammation and joint pain, particularly in those who are sensitive. As with gluten, an elimination diet can help you determine if nightshade vegetables are problematic for you.

Harvard researchers recently revealed that the more sugary soda men with knee osteoarthritis drink, the more likely the condition is to get worse. Even though increased consumption of soda is linked to weight gain, a known risk factor for osteoarthritis, the link was true regardless of the men’s weight.

This suggests the soda itself may be responsible for worsening the arthritis, although a cause-and-effect link has not been proven.

Cookies, candy, ice cream, brownies, doughnuts … all of these are loaded with sugar, which drives up your blood sugar and insulin, along with levels of inflammatory messengers called cytokines.
