Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique named after F.M. Alexander (1869-1955) is a method that teaches back pain sufferers to become aware of habitual movements that may be causing the persistence of back pain.  Originally developed to increase the body awareness of performers, the Alexander technique improves ease and freedom of movement, balance, support and coordination.

The movement principle behind the technique is that one should never use extra energy for a particular movement. Bad movement habits interfere with your natural poise and your body's capacity to escape chronic pain. The Alexander technique also releases tensions in the body and reeducates the person about simple activities such as sitting, lying down, standing, walking and lifting. The theory is that practicing an economy of movement gives you more energy for all your activities and prevents muscle strains.
