Making A Difference — What You Can Do

Here at The Healthy Back Institute we give out lots of advice on healing and staying healthy, which is easy to do when everything else in your life is going well. Really, it’s pretty difficult to make sure you go through physical therapy and sit up straight when you have a steady paycheck and a roof over your head. Now imagine how hard it is to worry about your health when the basics aren’t a foregone conclusion.

This is why the Healthy Back Institute recently made a $1000 donation to the charity Kiva.org, helping entrepreneurs around the world establish businesses that will allow them to support their families and communities. Life can be a lot less stressful when you have a means to take care of yourself and help your community grow and contribute to the overall well-being of those within that community.

Taking your success and giving back to help others achieve their goals is not only a great thing to do, but it’ll give you that warm and fuzzy feeling that makes it easy to relax and forget about the stressful things in life.

In the picture to the right is a woman named Florence Kerubo Saremo of Kenya. Florence has vowed to use her loan to construct more desperately needed affordable rental homes in her area. She is one of the 16 different people we were able to help as part of this donation. Now those in her area will have affordable housing so they can begin focusing on keeping their families happy and healthy.

Not all of us can simply write a check for a large sum of money to help out others, unfortunately. But there are other ways to help enhance the lives of others. For example, each time we give away a copy of my book, The 7-Day Back Pain Cure, we celebrate by making a donation to your choice of either Kiva.org or Habitat for Humanity.

But that’s not the only way you can make a difference. It’s rarely the big things that have a huge impact on the life and well-being of others, usually it’s the small things. Unsure of how you can make a difference? Try these charitable endeavors:

  • Volunteer your time at an after-school program to help keep the children of working parents off the streets and improve their chances of a successful future.
  • Donate your old clothes to Goodwill or a homeless shelter to help the local homeless have interview-ready clothes.
  • Volunteer for Habitat for Humanity; hands are better than money.
  • Clean up a local park to make sure children have a safe place to let loose and get some exercise.

It’s true that most of us don’t know where to start when it comes to doing something good for others. It isn’t as though these organizations hang signs on the windows that say “charity here”. But you can go online and find projects that are important to you and see how you can help locally. Being charitable doesn’t require you to go thousands of miles away; there are people in your own community who are in need of assistance in a variety of ways.

At the Healthy Back Institute we think that making a difference is not only the right thing to do, but it is also a great way to help your relax and feel better about life in general. Some problems are just too big to solve on your own, but knowing that you spent some of your time (or money) to help someone else shows you that even the smallest bit can help.
