Getting Out of Bed with Back Pain

back pain and bed

Yes it’s ok to get out of bed with back pain, but there’s a proper way to do it

One of the biggest myths about back pain is you should stay in bed until your back pain goes away.

Bad idea. When you first hurt your back you might want to take it easy in bed a day or two… tops. Anything more than that and all you’re doing is allowing your muscles to weaken.

But that’s not to say there isn’t a correct way to get out of bed to avoid reinjuring your back. Pain shouldn’t be a necessary part of getting out of bed – and it doesn’t have to be if you do it right.

In today’s video, Steve Hefferon demonstrates how to get out of bed with back pain in three easy steps:

  1. Roll to your side near the edge of the bed
  2. Let your feet come over the edge while you push down with your bedside elbow and push up with your opposite hand
  3. Stabilize with both hands as you sit up to keep your back in a more neutral, balanced, and stable state

Thanks for posting this. You would think that getting out of bed would be a no brainer, but when you are in pain even the little things can be cumbersome.

I appreciate your time and efforts…

I find stretching my back muscles in bed by bringing my knees up to my chest before I attempt to get out of bed helps too.
