Dr. Weil on Back Pain

Good Advice or Junk Medicine?

Fighting back pain and other pain safely, naturally and effectively — without prescription pain relievers or surgery that often does more harm than good — has been my mission for more than a decade.

But well before you found me … maybe through my book, The 7-Day Back Pain Cure, or through an Internet search on back or neck pain … you had probably heard of Dr. Andrew Weil, who for many decades has been a leader in the holistic health revolution.

I have long admired the efforts and many of the recommendations of Dr. Weil, so I recently decided to check out his positions on back pain. For the most part, we agree on the basics, with some minor differences. Here’s what I learned…

Acute vs. Chronic Pain

Dr. Weil’s recommendations don’t address the clear distinction between acute and chronic back pain, apart from the former “resolving itself on its own within two weeks.”

Yes, when back pain happens, it HURTS and you really don’t care about labeling it. If one kind of pain could be called good, however, it would have to be acute pain that’s temporary and probably won’t last more than a few weeks with the right care.

The kind of pain that lingers in the background and never quite goes away — chronic pain — is a real health problem and can be the most dangerous kinds of pain of all.

Why? Chronic pain can mask even more serious health issues ranging from diabetes to heart disease and even cancer.

Assessing Alternative Treatments

Dr. Weil does a great job of listing various CAM therapies for treating back pain, including tension myositis syndrome (TMS), exercise, transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation (TENS) and massage.

At the same time, it’s also very important to be reminded about the critical point that ties all of these alternative therapies together: Addressing the underlying causes of pain.

You experience back pain because your spine and body have been pulled out of their normal positions that develop over a long time into full-scale dysfunctions. The cumulative damage done at the foundational level, again over time, sends overt signals from your body to your brain in the form of pain that warn you about problems that need fixing.

No two people in the world have exactly the same type of back problems, thus different strategies will be necessary in each individual case to treat them. In other words, these problems are unique to you. This is why a program that brings an array of strategies, like Lose The Back Pain, has worked for tens of thousands of people around the world.

By the way, there are many exceptional, safe options you can use to treat the underlying causes of back pain, apart from those Dr. Weil recommends. Among them:

  • Avoid traditional pain drugs that can harm you, and consider a natural anti-inflammatory like Heal-N-Soothe that contains 12 of the most powerful and safest natural ingredients that trigger the healing process and tame your pain.
  • Restore proper muscle functioning and break the cycle of pain by mastering a trigger point pain relief system.
  • Use a dependable and effective source of far-infrared heat that penetrates deep inside your skin.

Just in case you wondered, yes, I am a fan of Dr. Weil and his matter-of-fact approach to alternative medicine…
