Good News from New Research

health spaIf you’re trying to decide where to go for your next vacation, a health spa may offer more than just a relaxing getaway. New research has revealed that even a week-long stay at a health and wellness retreat can have a marked influence on your health.

At one such spa in California, visitors follow a very low-calorie diet (a juice fast/cleansing of 800 calories a day) and participate in programs such as yoga, meditation, stress management and colonic hydrotherapy (a type of colon cleansing).

After the healthful week, visitors experienced:[i] [ii]

  • An average weight loss of nearly 7 pounds
  • A nearly 8 percent decrease in diastolic blood pressure
  • A 5 percent decline in cholesterol level and BMI (body mass index)
  • Decreases in mercury, sodium and chloride levels
  • Improvements in anger tension, vigor, fatigue, confusion, anxiety and depression
  • Significant changes in their feelings about spirituality and religion

Participants ranged in age from 21 to 85, so it appears that people of virtually all ages may get a health boost from visiting a health spa.

Is Wellness Tourism for You?

So-called “wellness tourism” has been on the rise in recent years, with the spa industry growing from $60 billion in 2007 to an estimated $73 billion in 2012. The number of spas worldwide has increase 22 percent during this time, with more than 87,000 spas in operation today.[iii]

Of course, a visit to a wellness spa is a luxury many cannot afford, despite the potential health gains offered. A six-day retreat at the California spa used in the above-mentioned study will set you back anywhere from $2,300 to over $3,700, depending on time of year, the type of room desired and occupancy … and that’s not including travel expenses.
