A recent online US survey found that most people (in relatively equal numbers) believe that the primary cause of obesity is either poor diet or lack of exercise. A far fewer number believe genetics is to blame.
Using data from five countries, similar trends were noted regarding the beliefs but another, somewhat surprising, trend was also revealed: those who believed diet was the primary cause of weight gain had lower BMIs (body mass index, a measure of body fat in relation to height and weight).[i]
