According to the latest government figures from the National Institutes of Health, Americans buy $11 billion worth of supplements every year.
And in many cases, I doubt they are getting their money’s worth.
Look at most supplement bottles and you’ll see each ingredient is listed by weight.
For example, chewable Vitamin C generally comes in 500 mg tablets (mg stands for milligrams, a standard unit of weight).
But what does 500 mg means for you? What is it actually doing inside your body? Can you feel the effects?
Weight doesn’t give you the total picture.
Imagine what your mouth feels like after eating spicy foods…
Steve Hefferon, Healthy Back Institute co-founder, grows Thai Dragon Peppers. These are hot…rating anywhere from 50,000 – 100,000 on the Scoville unit scale (Scoville is a rating scale for the “spicyness” of peppers).
As a comparison, yellow banana peppers (which I love on sandwiches) rate at around 100-900 Scoville units. The wildly popular Sriracha sauce is around 1,000 – 2,500 Scoville units. And the Carolina reaper – one of the hottest peppers on the planet – rates at a whopping 2 million Scoville units.
(I can feel my tongue burning already!)
What this means is you could eat a handful of banana peppers (heavy in weight, but a low Scoville score) and probably feel a little tingle in your throat. But just a drop of Carolina Reaper (very low weight, and the highest Scoville score) would set your mouth on fire.
Now you tell me, what is more important? Weight or potency?
Which is why I believe lots of people who take supplements are getting ripped off…especially people who are taking ENZYME supplements.
For example, take a look at the supplement facts for a very popular enzyme formula (on the left below) and our formula, Heal-N-Soothe (on the right):
The first enzyme supplement label shows a total weight of 1,500 mg. This INCLUDES the weight of the enzyme blend AND the other ingredients.
Two problems here:
First, it is impossible to know how much of EACH enzyme you are getting compared to the other additional ingredients listed at the bottom.
Second, there is nothing stating how potent the enzymes are.
Now compare this to the Heal-N-Soothe label above.
You’ll see very clearly how much the systemic enzymes blend weighs (382 mg) and how much of each additional herb is included.
And you’ll notice another set of numbers on the Heal-N-Soothe label…

What do these number stand for?
These are different “fibrolynic units.”
You see, enzymes – just like peppers – are not judged by weight, but by potency.
The Scoville Unit tells us the potency of a particular pepper. The fibrolynic unit tells us the potency of an enzyme.
Without diving too much into the science, proteolytic enzymes break down “dead tissue” that can cause inflammation, clog up your blood vessels (interfering with blood circulation), and cause you pain.
Simply put, the higher the fibrolynic unit, the more “dead tissue” proteolytic enzymes can clear from your body. As this “dead tissue” clears out…blood flow is restored, inflammation is flushed out, and pain subsides.
Ignoring fibolynic units when purchasing enzymes is like ignoring the scoville unit when you buy hot sauce. Remember, 100 pounds of banana peppers can’t hold a candle to just one Carolina Reaper. It’s not size or weight…it’s the potency.
So, whatever systemic proteolytic enzyme supplement you choose, make sure you know the fibrolynic units.
