I am reading these posts with great interest as i have the same question / concern. I too have a herniation at l5/s1 with sciatica involving my right thigh and sometimes my right calf. I have been treating this for 5 months now and have had some improvement but i cannot understand why i can have a string of basically dercent days then it will just flare up and i am miserable. I am semi retired and do not do anything to aggrivate it. It just seems to rendomly flare up. It becomes quite depressing and i get very stressed out. Can stress make it worse? I have started spinal decompression therapy. it is a 4 week program and after 1 week i had a string of 3 good days and last 2 have been not great. Deos this treatment work for herniations? Can this treatyment maske you worse before better? and why does it tend to flare up and act so randomly. It really gets to me sometimes.

Hi!
I have a bulging disc at L5S1, and the same burning sensation. Actually I had the symptoms and a signal that something is wrong with my back but did not care much till it was more serious. The MRI and EMG showed disc bulge. But after a couple of therapy it was ok-like, so started my jogging, biking, weight training, etc., and thus more abuse to my back and it resurfaced. Now, my advice is never take back pain casually, be very serious about your back pain. Now I do Yoga exercises (people may call it by different names) which have helped me a lot and will help you a lot. These are basically 8 to 10 exercises to be performed at least 2 times a day (4 times is excellent).
These are postures to be held as per your strenght and ease (without putting much stress on your body), as against repetition of postures. Perform each posture only once.
1) Lie on you back, hand straigh near your hips, palms facing down. Lift one leg up 30 to 45 degree and hold it for about 30 seconds or as per your tolerance. Do the same with the other leg. Relax. This is to strenghten your lower abdomen.
2) Now do it with both the legs up. Hold the posture and slowly release.
3) Bring both your thighs (knees) close to your chest (stomach) with the help of your hands. Hold for about a minute (2 mts. is good), you can gradually increase the timing. Release slowly. If not able to do with both legs start with one leg at a time.
4) Do step 1 (i.e. raising both legs) and at the same time raise your chest, arching in your stomach, hands straigt in the direction of your toes. Only you buttocks and some part of you back should touch the ground. This posture will be like a saucer or a bowl. Hold the posture as per your convenience and strength and release slowly. This strenghtens upper and lower abs.
5) Still lying on your back, fold your knees and bring your heels as close to you buttocks as possible and arch (lift) your back up (stomach to the ceiling). You can support the back with your palms in the begining stages. Hold for a minute (2 mts. is good) or as per your strenght, and increase the duration over the time as you master the pose. Release slowly. This posture is known as bridging.

NOW EXERCISES WITH THE STOMACH ON THE FLOOR

6) Lie on your stomach and lift one leg up, not more than 30 to 40 degrees. Feel the muscles work at your buttocks (remember it should not be painful). Knee straight, hold the posture for 30 seconds and release slowly. Hands should be folded under the chin. Do it with the other leg. After mastering this posture over a period of time do with both the legs at the same time.
7) Keep you hands straigh close to your body near your hips palms facing up. lift your shoulders and chest from the floor and try and look at the ceiling (as per you ease, do not over do it). Do not lift your stomach (which is done by experts, and you too can do it over a period of time). Hold for about 30 seconds and release slowly (increase the duration over the time). This is a serpantine posture (like a snake).
8) Now do step 6 (with both legs up) and step 7 (chest up) at the same time. That is lift you both legs, head, shoulders and chest (not your stomach) up at the same time and hold the posture for about 30 seconds. Release slowly and relax. This is boat like posture, like a boat in the water
9) Crouch on your knees and hands like a four-legged animal (like they take a start-up position in a running race, but both the knees on the ground and palms on the ground). Lift one leg straigt and out (do not bend the knee), parallel to your entire body and back, hold for about 30 seconds (increase to 1 minute over time). Do the same with your other leg. Relax.
DO THESE EXERCISES VERY SLOWLY AND WITH RELAXED MIND AND BODY. DO NOT OVER-EXERT YOUR MUSCLES.

Hope this helps. In case of discomfort discontinue that particular exercise. And if apprehensive consult your doctor.

Regards,
is there any way to put the discs back in the righ place??

I have recently got my MRI done. I have posterior disc protrusion at L4-L5 level & L4-L5 level and posterior disc bulging at L3-L4 & L5-S1 levels. I have told by my doctor that doing some special exercise can stop getting the problem worse. But i am very anxious to know if i can heal it! i mean to do some special exercise to put the discs back in their right positions.

Yes...if all aspects of your disc situation are addressed properly and accurately, you have a 90 percent chance of full, manageable recovery...the questions you need answered are,,,1,What level of degeration is my spine and pelvis??2.Is there any evidence of prior fracture, dislocation, fixation, subluxation???3.How well did my spine and pelvis work as short as 1 year ago???4.Is this problem an accumulation effect of innocent injuries or neglect of warning signals in my life???5. What was my delivery from my mother's womb like? Was I a baby who already exhibited C1/C2 subluxation issues which have now compromised my functional balance and nerve supply/control for so long that my roof fell off a long time ago and now foundation is ______________________________________________________________________________________
Re: is there any way to put the discs back in the righ place??

I will be putting a posting on here later regarding the C1/C2 vertebrae.

The effect that misalignment of these two vertebrae can have on the entire spine is staggering.

My wife discovered that she had moderate to severe scoliosis over a year ago. X-rays were taken to confirm this.

Our chiropractor uses the Pettibon System method to treat scoliosis.

He worked only on her C1/C2 vertebrae. Not once did he work on her on back.

In the course of a year, her spine has improved by 80%.

The center line of her spine is now no longer "pushed to one side".

This improvement was shown by an x-ray taken a couple of weeks ago.

I have personally been amazed at this.

Our old chiropractor works with a local surgeon who is one of the few people in the world who can remove Harrington Rods from the spine [ large metal rods put in to "help" scoliosis ].

Once the surgeon has removed them, the chiropractor uses the Pettibon System to get the spine back to normal [ or as near as is possible ].

No one is exactly sure of the mechanisms by which this works, however there are many interesting theories.

If anyone would like a copy of the x-rays, drop me an e-mail and I'll send them to you.

Behi

To get started, I'd suggest you try the Lose The Back Pain system.

The stretches and exercises will help reduce the pressure on your disks.

Stand sideways to a mirror and have a friend check whether the center line of your ears lines up with the middle of your shoulders.

If it does not, that means your head [ and most likely shoulders ] are forward of where they should be.

Lay down on the floor. Relax. Have a friend see if they can fit their hand under the small of your back.

If they can, then that can mean that your lower back [ lumbar region ] has too much of a curve.

These are very rough checks, but should get you started.

I'd suggest you see a physical therapist who can check for any problems with your posture and also for any muscular imbalances.

Also try to get a series of x-rays done;

Side view of lumbar region

Front view of pelvis

Side view of neck.

Let us know how you do.

Which country are you in ?

Your doctor will say no, but he'll want to cut it out of you and pay for his kids braces. The herniation will shrink over time and it will stop causing unpleasant symptoms if you take care of it. I have an MRI to prove this.

Behi,

One other approach is to forget about your diagnosis and stop worrying and concentrate on the the physical things that you can have direct control of like your ability to improve your strength and flexibility...

If you continue to ask the right questions and contiue to grow your knowledge you will have no choice but to make improvements, if you work towards making your body more balances and more stable you will and can achieve a more improved condition...

it will just take a effort on your part to acquire that awareness and ability to get the job done...
