Back Pain - please help !!
Hi,
I am really hoping somebody could help take away my back pain.
I have been suffering from lower back pain for about 10 years. I don't know how it happened but it was a slow onset which has gradually got worse over time.
I am able to play sports (football, cricket, snooker, swimming) etc but the pain is always there 24/7. I must admit that it hasn't yet disturbed sleep during nights but in the morning & during day, my back feels very stiff and it feels like my spine can snap.
Sometimes after I have played football my back feels better the next day but then gets back to normal pain.
I am running, cyclying, stretching etc but nothing is really take pain away.
Last month (Feb 2008) I had an MRI scan done and the reports states as follows:
=============================================
MRI Of Lumbo Sacral Spine:
Sagittal T1 & FSE T2 weighted scans of the lumbo-sacral spine were studied and these were correlated with axial T1 & FSE T2 weighted scans from L1 to sacrum.
Lumbar curvature is reduced.
L4-5 disc show mild posterocentral disc protrusion indenting the thecal sac however exiting nerve roots appear normal.
L5-S1 disc show posterocentral disc protrusion with propensity towards right side indenting the thecal sac however exiting nerve roots appear normal.
Rest of lumbar intervertebral discs display normal signal intensity and vertical height.
Rest of lumbar vertebral bodies, their pedicles, laminae, transverse and spinous processes show normal anatomical configuration & alignment.
The lower end of the spinal cord, conus medullaris, rest of nerve roots of the cauda equina and lumbar sub-arachnoid CSF spaces show normal MR morphology.
The pre & para-vertebral soft tissues do not show any abnormality.
================================================
I would be so grateful if somebody can explain how to sort this back problem out.
Many thanks in advance

Lak,
Have you identified and started work on improving your muscle imbalances? If not, it's the first place to start?

Hi Jesse,
Thanks for your response. No I haven't yet started on the muscle balance program and I think I will give it a try as the fundamental principles makes sense.
Would you be so kind to explain what the MRI report states in laymens terms and how the muscle balance program can help? I mean how can I unreduce the lumbar curvature and improve my disc problems?
Shall i stop playing soccer, snooker, swimming, running etc whilst I am waiting for the program?
I am currently seeing a PT but the exercises given are not really working and I am afraid its making things worse by stretching areas I should not be stretching. Also many years ago i saw a Oesteopath for many sessions but nothing really helped.
I also suffer pain in my upper back (not always though).
My job involves sitting most of the day but I can get up to walk about and stretch regularly.
I have noticed that when i do a particular stretch i can feel the back making noises ( i think its the facet joints cracking). This strecth is when I am lying on my back and bring knee across body to touch opposite side and vice versa.
The scan i had last month was 2nd one. I had first MRI in 2001 and that showed no problems (even though my back was hurting), so as you can see my problem is getting worse.
I know its a long posting but any help would be so much appreciated.
Thanks Jesse,
Lak

Re: Back Pain - please help !!
sorry forgot to add in my last post. In December 2007 I was suffering from flu, fever, which i get regulary throughout the year and was resting in bed. After about 2 days I got up and could not put foot down or walk properly, I was in terrible pain and the slightest movement was horrendous. The doctors prescribed painkillers and I was off work for about 3-4 weeks. Was this caused by a nerve problem or muscle imbalance?
Thanks,
Lak

Hi Steve, Dave, Jesse
I came across this website http://www.chirogeek.com.
I found it really useful in understanding how back/discs etc work.
I hope it helps you guys and others in research on back problems.
Thanks,
Lak

Re: Back Pain - please help !!
Steve, Dave, Jesse,
Some Postural Dysfunctions I have noticed through experiments at home. I would appreciate some feedback please regards the type of exercises I should be doing.
From these experiments would I need pelvic/hip & SIJ manipulative treatment and would the LTBP & Inversion table help?
Standing Up:
1. Left shoulder is high.
Lying Down:
1.On my BACK - Right shoulder high & Right hip is high
2.On my BACK – Left leg is longer than Right leg
3.On my FRONT – Right hip is high
1 leg Squat:
When I go down to about 60-90 degree bend in the knee and stand on my left leg it is not as balanced as when I do the same exercise standing on the right leg ie left leg is probably weaker.
Thanks guys
Lak
