Stress, Anxiety and tension
Does anyone have any tips or techniques they use to relieve themselves of tension in the body?
I know I am a tense person who is constantly fidgeting and unable to sit still for any period of time and I find I get angry easily, especially whilst driving.
After doing some reading into the subject I have come to the conclusion that this is certainly not helping me alleviate my back symptons.
Once again any advice is welcomed greatly.

Re: Stress, Anxiety and tension
If you're like me and do a lot of driving, anger is definately an issue! I have tried to realize that the havoc that stress causes on my body due to little external things is just not worth it...I'm not going to ruin my health by getting stressed by "stuff". When I get stressed by driving I try to do some controlled breathing exercises, concentrating on the in and out of the airflow...it's pretty hard to stay stressed when you do that. Also, sometimes just doing some simple isometric exercises and stretches can unwind you. A hot tub or spa works wonders for melting away tension at the end of a day. Before we got one I found that a warm bath with a portable spa unit was effective and not just for women!

read mind over back pain by dr. sarno or the one by Dr. scott brady....both explain the mind/body response to anger/anxiety and solutions...
Also there is a website by dr. schubiner called

Re: Stress, Anxiety and tension
Thanks, Laurie/Paul.
That is the book I 'm reading at the moment. It's interesting but in a way goes against everything the LTBP course is trying to achieve, so i'm kind of stuck in two minds. At the moment I believe that my physical problems are causing me pain but that tension in my body is also.
So i'll continue with the exercises/stretches and be happy about it.
Driving is a big problem because I tend to arrive home after a days work in a state of madness. Slowly i'm controlling this by taking a moment to think of something else as soon as I get angry.

Re: Stress, Anxiety and tension
Paul-
I hear ya....I went through the same quandry. However, I used the LTBP to get rid of the acute stage, however when i felt i built enough of a base i felt something was holding me back and that was my mind. After i let go of all the physical i improved the most. Do I still do stretches? Hell yes? but for overall health and fitness. Do i still get massage? yes....to feel good. I have removed the panic out of when i feel that twinge.
I really believe many people become chronic and develop bad associations and our pain patterns have memory. Pretty soon we are crippled. Remember, the back is made to move and it is not fragile.
After listening to Dave H. I realized I may have SI joint dysfunction and sure as **** after going to my therapist i was checked for it and i have it. I believe it was the crux of my problem from day 1. I am now 90% pain free and with this new info I am excited to get to 100%.
I guess what I am professing is this. It generally is not an all or nothing.
I found a combo of things
1) LTBP
2) CHEK practitioner
3) Neuro Muscular Massage
4) Now the SIJD excercises to release my sacro-illiac
**Also when i lost 30 pounds it helped alot. I still have 15 to go. I am 5'10" and 215. When I am 200 I am around 10% bodyfat which is my goal. I think my powerful build is part of my problem. I have a 48" chest and 35" waist but huge thighs and back. So I am example of looking very muscular but not being very balanced.

Re: Stress, Anxiety and tension
I think your spot on, I still need to establish which muscles are casuing me the big prolems but i'm sure i'll figure that out soon.
When I get that "twinge" or a spasm i'm very good at, like you said - not panicking and just re-itterating to myself that it's my mental state that is also causing my problems and thus don't let my mind go on the pain rollercoaster. It seems to be helping more as each day passes, but ony on a very small scale, I haven't yet managed to convince myself.
We may have the same name but we certainly don't have the same physical attributes, I am over 6ft and ussually less than 80KG's. My body fat ratio would be quite good (fast metabalism) although I am now quite unhealthy after giving up any "real" exercise over a year ago.
I'm going to start doing some exercise again soon and try to get my mind into the space in which I am convinced that it won't make my back any worse.

Re: Stress, Anxiety and tension
Hi guys,
I can quite honestly say I am having the best 3 days I have had in 4 years since my latest myofascial tratment.
I still can't help but think the treatment is mumbo jumbo, but I think having someone else help me relax and take away all my stress, even for an hour, is having lasting effects. It is a long weekend at the moment so I hope the real bad pain doesn't return when I go back to work on Mon.
I encourage everone to try some pain reduction techniques via there mental capacity and too try and understand how the brain can cause us pain when we are stressed.
On thurs night I felt the pain coming back only hours after the treatment, I was at a gig and getting very angry with people around me. Suddenly my left shoulder was extremely painful. I walked away and took 5 minutes reflecting on my treatment and calming my mind. When the gig was over (20 mins later) the pain had gone.

Great news!!! Enjoy it and do not become hypersensitive to every twinge we may feel......because we then expect the next episode and inadvertently tighten.
I also had good news. Dave had me thinking my original problem was SIJD and sure enough it was. I still get tight in the groin on occasion but after being checked for this disorder was given 4 corrective stretches that eliminates it in its track. It is called the DonTigny method. He has specialized in SIJD for 25+ years.

Cheers Paul,
good too hear you have found some relief too.
I just wanted to add that I still do and will continue to use the LTBP system and the back joy, which true to it's word - it is a joy.
I have established positive mental attachments to both these products so it would be stupid to stop using them. They both also help my posture and my health in general and allow me to more comfortably get through my working week.
