Herniated disc L4 what should i do now?
All information claiming to treat back/siatic pain seems to be only of use as alturnitive choice to surgery.unfortunatly i was unaware of them before my spinal fusion L5-S1 15yrs ago.I would greatly apreciate if anyone knows of any treatment that may be of use to me know.As i am suffering lft lower back pain with left siatic nerve pain ranging from lower back down to my toes, due to the hardware in my back most scanes are inconclusive (blured)however i do have one that shows disc herniation L4 but scanes are not clear enough to show any pinching of the nerves-siatic etc dispite all the PAIN.i am hesitant to take pain killers other meds due to long term use and they make me drowsy unable to function normaly on a daily basis.so if there is anyone out there that has info or advice for me other then *Pre opp treatments *meds *Surgery! id love to hear from you.also if you are/have experienced a simular situation thanxs...

Re: Herniated disc L4 what should i do now?
MSP-
I do not know the answer but i will say this. never, ever give up...Ever!! keep looking for that answer. i know people (myself included) who it took years. I was lucky. I had surgery in 1988 and still suffered sciatica afterwards. Had a anterior cyst against sciatic nerve for 2.5 years and leg atrophied. After surgery i was so afraid to do anything. I was still in great shape but afraid. i then saw a mind/body doctor in NYC (dr sarno) who assured me i was okay and was repressing anger. I was pain free for 16 years until 3 years ago.
I then attacked my imbalances and combined this with my mind/body excercises and i am in better shape than i was when i was 20 (i am 44).....12 months ago I was a mess (overweight, depressed, no energy, no hope....) It was not easy but i function with no restrictions now. I had tremendous sciatica but a negative MRI....NORMAL....but my pain was as intense before my surgery......
must look inside as well as outside,,,,,Try the LTBP and read Mind over Back Pain by dr. sarno.....
good luck

Hi Paul
Very often, people with sciatica and a negative MRI actually have a tight piriformis muscle [ a muscle in the buttocks ] which can compress the sciatic nerve.
This will not show up in an MRI.
Some people have great belief in Dr. Sarno, and others not.
The only problem I have with his theories are that he claims that ALL back problems are caused by mental issues.
That is just not correct.
However he is absolutely correct that repressed anger can cause back pain. Stress and back pain are very closely linked.
He has cured many people when no other method worked [ Howard Stern and John Stossel of ABC's 20/20 are two ].
Again, cures for back pain very often may require a mixture of techniques.
There is absoultely no such thing as a 100% guaranteed back pain relief system, but many, such as LTBP, Meilus Therapy, Pettibon System etc achieve excellent results.

It's also very important to point out that many people have used our Lose The back Pain system after having multiple back surgeries and it was our system that was the one thing that finally gave them LASTING relief.
Have you tried it Paula?

Re: Herniated disc L4 what should i do now?
I agree that it is a combination of things. I had imblances and rectified those and suffered from pseudo sciatica with major trigger points in the gluteus medius that gave me tremendous calf pain. Although I addressed the imbalances and had strength and flexibility it was not until i saw a Dr. Scott in Orlando that i realized i was swallowing alot of anger. i am a perfectionist and people pleaser (2 known personalities for TMS). This in turn repression of anger leads to tightening of muscles and ischemia. As soon as I did the journaling and self-talk I had no more pain. it took 2 weeks but I went from being a functioning person with a 5-8 pain level to a 0-2 level almost overnight. I go to a NMT and Chek Practioner who could not believe the suppleness of my usually tight glutes, psoas (which had to be treated weekly) and IT band. My internal and external rotation increased 33% with no pain. I always had tight groin pain.
It was the combination of the 3 I believe. LTBP and my chek practioner was great (they take subjective measurements of hips, shoulders, head, etc.), NMT and the thing that set me free was the mind.bdoy connection....
After being in pain so long we are so conditioned that we are damaged and fragile......When I sleep this way I hurt....When i forget my back pillow I hurt....So it is hard to let go of that but when you do anything is possible.
After 3.5 years of constant calf pain I have been pain free 6 months now with no recurrences. I am lifting weights and back to Muay-Thai and Ju-Jit-zu.
In summation your program was a vital cog in my recovery. I do not know about the women you refer to, but i am sure she is good. I am fortunate to have Dr. Brady right here in florida. He was a 15 yr chronic back pain sufferer as well.....
Thanks for all your work

Thanks to all who have replied,
I wish my pain ran out as quick as my money$$$
I would like to try some pain relief programs thou i dont know how to narrow down the actual cause of my pain.
If it is muscle inbalance causing the sciatic pain how do i know which back problem is the cause.has the muscle imbalance caused the scoliosis or the herniated disc l4 or the tilted pelvis or all the above ? Is there another underlying problem yet to discover due to my images resulting in inconclusive due to rod and screws first opp for spondylolisthesis l5/s1 do i need to know this before i can concentrate on the exact or correct muscle exercises?or what symptom to treat etc.(confused)
