That is called Contrasting...

Best if you are post 72 hours Acute...

On average you would alternated every 20 minutes to tolerance...

Best to experiment to understand what your tolerance is, for you it may be only 10 minutes

I was doing hot packs and did myself very painful favor. My chiropractor told me ice, ice and only ice, which really make sense because every time you injure muscle, it gets inflamed, and cold packs are needed to bring inflammation down. However, be aware of ice burns, which is also lesson I learned myself :). If you keep ice packs on bare skin for too long, more than 15, 20 minutes, you can get ice burns. So moderation is the key, as usual

Ice and Ice only should be used for the first 72 hours post any event/Injury, after 72 hours either Ice or Heat can be used...

Cold is usually used first because it reduces swelling and inflammation. Use Ice for the first 48 hours after an injury. Apply for 20 minutes, remove for 20 minutes, then repeat.The use of cold vs. heat is an important subject because they have opposite reactions in the body. Using the wrong one will aggravate an injury, while using the correct one can greatly aid in your treatment.
