severe pain when standing after getting out of bed
I have been doing stretches for sciatic pain. For the last month when I get out of bed I have severe pain from my calf to hip. It gets better after I am on my feet for approx 1 hr. My calf and hip still hurts during the day but the stretches help. Is the morning pain normal?

I don't know if it is normal. But my pain is at its worst upon rising in the morning. I think it is because the muscles tighten up while you are laying down. The same thing happens after sitting or laying for a prolonged time during the day.

Re: severe pain when standing after getting out of bed
Hi Roger
How old is your mattress??
From speaking to alot of people I have found and myself included I feel really good in the morning, upon rising, for me it is movement that causes my pain, as in walking or even standing for too long...If I didn't have to walk I'd be fine...lol
I find that for myself laying down, allows my muscles to relax, and tension is reduced.
You could try the following:
1. Make sure when you are getting out of bed you do so properly. Below is the method I am talking about, which may help your pain.
"Use what is called a logroll to get your body in a position to get out of the bed. The technique goes like this: As you are lying on your back, roll over onto your side so you are facing the side of the bed you plan to get out of. Gently bring your knees toward your chest, keeping your legs in contact with the bed at all times. As you do this, simultaneously use your hands and arms to push your upper body up off of the bed; let your legs fall slowly off of the edge. As your upper body raises up, most of your weight will be on the hip, buttocks, and thighs rather than on the spine. Complete the maneuver by putting your hands on your thighs and extending your back up as you push yourself up and out of the bed. Keep your back straight and your head up as you rise".
2. Try different sleeping positions when your sleeping. What poisiton do you sleep in currently? You could try sleeping in other positions if your body allows you to, such as on your side with your knees to your chest, I find I have to sleep with the affected leg, uptowards my chest and the other leg extended.
3. Try placing a pillow between your legs when sleeping, as this stops the pelvis from dipping.
These are just ideas, but it seems to me that your sleeping for 6-8hrs a night, if your lucky to not be kept awake with pain, and it's something that your doing or not doing with your body and posture that could be causing you some pain.
Hope this helps.
Thanks
Dan :)

Tonia
I'm going to send you details of someone who may be able to help.
He has dealt with a lot of people who have cancer and other pains.
Give him a call.
By talking to you on the phone, he might be able to point you in the right direction.

Re: severe pain when standing after getting out of bed
I am new to sciatica. It developed when I was trying to compensate for a broken bone in my foot -- the foot pain was NOTHING compared to the sciatica pain which felt like a hot iron bar pulling along my back, hip, pelvis, groin, and down my leg to my knee. It has been accompanied by swelling of my knee and continual throbbing knee pain. BUT the last two days I have felt better during the day. The minute I lie down for more than 1/2 hour, though, I get that gripping pain when I stand again. And this morning, my whole leg was swollen until I had been up and hobbling around for about an hour. Tomorrow I'm going to try a hot shower first thing in the morning.
I have a feeling that may help.

Ay, your discs fill with fluid when in a horizontal position. For this reason, it is a bad idea to do any bending for at least 1-2 hours after getting up. Before that, the spinal fluid increases stress on the discs. Fluid level goes down when you stand up.
Otherwise it could be your position. You don't want to be twisted or bend. Have you looked into a McKenzie lumbar roll?

Also the mattress should be firm, not sagging like a hammock although it should conform to your bodies curves so the spine is in a straight line.

Thanks so much. That's just what it feels like -- fluid in my back, hips and knee. I'm looking into the lumbar support roll. My mattress is pretty firm. And, yes, I hate to admit it, but I'm twisted like a pretzel when I sleep. I'll try to straighten out! I wonder if it would help to sleep in a half-sitting position.
