Water therapy for back pain
I used to be a YMCA aquatic director, and taught an Arthritis Foundation water exercise program. I heard constant praise from my class members about their ability to exercise without pain
After leaving the Y, I was involved in a pickup truck/pedestrian accident.I was the pedestrian. After 10 days in the hospital, with four cracked vertebrae as the least serious of problems. I told the doctors that I couldn't wait to get in the water. They said "That's exactly what we were going to tell you to do"
It was a remarkable recovery, starting with an easy water aerobics class, to more vigorous, and then on to my lap swimming.
I highly recommend water therapy for back pain, or any joint problem.

Re: Water therapy for back pain
Hi Sally,
Both my neurosurgeon and Steve from Lose the back pain advised me to do some water therapy as an element in my recovery from back and sciatic pain.
For me it wasn't the whole treatment but it certainly helped and I still continue with it. I found it was important to start very gently and gradually build up. I didnt actually swim for ages just walking, floating, doing gentle exercises etc.

Hi Ann,
My best wishes for your respite from back pain!
One thing that helped me--the instructor for the water aerobics class I started with was a physical therapist. She knew exactly what I needed. You might check at a YMCA near you, if you have one. They usually have outstanding instructors.

Re: Water therapy for back pain
Hi Sally, Thankyou for your best wishes to me :) I do go to a pool which has lovely warm water and I do all the exercises there. I try to mostly go twice a week and keep on doing it. Water therapy, lose the back pain system and some massage therapy was the good combination for me for sorting out my back problems.
Hi Steve,Thankyou for the audio-well worth listening to. As I said to Sally I recall you telling me to get into the water and most of those exercises to do in the pool and they are very effective :)
