Poor Sleep and Fibromyalgia -New Study Shows Important Link

Researchers have unveiled a link between poor sleep and fibromyalgia. Norwegian scientists have discovered that the risk of fibromyalgia increased as sleep problems became more severe.

The poor sleep and fibromyalgia association was especially true among middle-aged and older women.

Poor sleep has often been cited as a symptom of fibromyalgia, as it is with many diseases that cause pain. But is it possible that poor sleep may actually be a contributor to fibromyalgia?

According to one of the investigators, Dr. Paul Mork from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, “Our findings indicate a strong association between sleep disturbance and fibromyalgia risk in adult women. We found a dose-response relation, where women who often reported sleep problems had a greater risk of fibromyalgia than those who never experienced sleep problems.”

Fibromyalgia was first recorded in 1904 and has grown into a health epidemic impacting around 6 million people in the U.S. alone. Women are almost nine times more likely to become afflicted than men.

If you suffer from poor sleep, please do not downplay the importance of addressing the issue. Proper sleep is essential to optimal health, energy, clarity, and longevity, and poor sleep is associated with many serious diseases.

I have ALWAYS thought this was a “cause” rather than a “symptom”. It goes right along with all the other statistical correlations with fibromyalgia…being a caregiver with few support systems, having stressful job or other major stress factors that go on a long time. The fibromyalgia “fog” which, to me, is the same as the “fog” a person experiences if they have been sleep deprived for several days due to stress or business that has to be taken care of. When the sleep deprivation goes on a long time, the “fog” becomes more permanent and its harder and harder to feel “refreshed” even after long sleep periods. The mind goes on some kind of “autopilot” where they seem to function externally but feel detached and “foggy” about what’s going on, extreme exhaustion, minor and major injuries that never heal properly. Also weight gain…if you are not sleeping or not sleeping well and restfully, you have less ability to do physical activities that would keep the weight down, and all of that goes into the vicious circle, more weight, less sleep, less physical activity, more fog, more pain, less healing, and round and round until the fibromyalgia down spiral begins.

Yes, I agree that poor sleep is a cause of fibromyalgia. Studies have show that when people are deprived of sleep, they develop fibromyaliga-like symptons. However, getting good sleep for fibro sufferers is not easy.

Hi, I’ve suffered with Fibromyalgia for many years. I too find a link with sleep depravation and fms. I was given gabbapentin and this drug enabled me to sleep better and feel more like I could cope. once I stopped the drug I was back to square one. Now, I have pelvic congestion and pudendal nerve entrapment although I have just had decompression surgery for that. I am still in horrendous pain.
