Chronic Low Back Pain and Suicide

Depression is a treatable illness. Yet suicide remains the 9th leading reported cause of death in the United States.

For years studies on the link between back pain and depression have shown that depression and anxiety occur in as many as half of patients with chronic pain.

Now recent findings from several suicide prevention agencies in the United Kingdom have brought to light a disturbing direct link between lower back pain and suicide.

In those findings, 2 in 3 of the suicide victims with available general practitioner records had visited their doctor in the three months preceding their death. And 77% of them were there for treatment of low back pain.

The risk of major depression increases in lockstep with the severity of pain. Therefore, it would appear that decreasing lower back pain gives you a greater chance of overcoming or even preventing severe depression in the first place.

Unfortunately, traditional treatments for lower back pain often fail for the simple reason they fail to address the underlying cause of the condition. In the vast majority of back pain cases not involving traumatic injury, muscle imbalances are the culprit.

The good news is this cause of back pain can be successfully treated without surgery or long term harmful medications. In fact, a quick stretch can usually provide fast relief. Watch the free video on this lower back pain information page for one example you can try right now.

Sometimes backpain is from the sciatic nerve being irritated.pinched. Similiar to a bad tooth ache, only you cant extract ur spine as you can a tooth. Unless you have had this type of condition, you CANNOT even understand what it is like. There is nothing else like it. All you can tell ppl is”your back hurts”. There is no apparent outter physical signs of your condition.
Would be like 1 person saying their leg hurts from a pulled muscle and another saying their leg hurts from a gunshot wound to the leg, without the outer physical symtoms of the gunshot, ppl would be ignorant to who is worse

John is right. I a was always active. I injured my back and had two unsuccessful back fusions. The last surgery helped with one pain but left me with indescribable sciatic pain. It is like a gun shot, thou I’ve never been shot, I can only imagine nothing being worse than this nerve pain as like a gun shot. It 24/7 and has completely changed me and my lifestyle. Pain medication slightly masks the pain and opens up another world of problems. So I opt not to take them unless I am going out with my family. If I am home I will stay on ice laying flat watching the world go by wondering hw I got here. You must be wondering if I can have another surgery to fix this? I can’t answer that. Two back to back surgeries within 13 months has already taken its toll on me an my family both financially, emotionally and physically. We are now losing our home and my wife her job. You really never knw what’s going on with people. I no longer judge and understand how scuicide really comes about. It’s not about weakness or being selfish, it’s real tangible pain.

A quick stretch?? It’s that sort of nonsense that infuriates sufferers. Hope is key. Hope that any day a medical breakthrough will occur and take the pain away. Use whatever pain free time you have to enjoy life.

    1. Hi Simon,

You’re right, hope IS key to ending depression.

That’s exactly why we search every day for ways to help people end their pain and live active, fulfilling lives again. Because once you can be active without pain, many also find dramatic improvements in depressive symptoms as well.

In this particular case, the stretch Jesse showed at the linked page can help many back pain sufferers relieve pain because it targets a common root cause of pain: muscle imbalances.

So that’s the good news. There really IS hope! 🙂

You can learn more about why stretches like this and other exercises, called muscle balance therapy, makes sense here:
